Today is Easter in most of the world, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus according to the Christian tradition. Even for those of us who aren’t particularly religious, Easter is an important American cultural tradition, a celebration of life and renewal. That’s why the holiday got melded with the ancient pagan fertility rituals associated with the Equinox.
Those familiar with the Bible story of the Last Supper know that Easter is historically associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover. It often (but not always) coincides with the Christian celebration of Easter. 2018 is one of those years when they do coincide; Easter falls right in the middle of it. Like Hanukkah, it is actually an eight-day celebration, starting and ending with the Sabbath (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.) Like Easter, it’s an important holiday for families to renew their bonds and honor traditions.
Happy Easter and Gut Yom Tov!
