Today is the first day you can sign up for our latest Goodreads giveaway. The prizes are five signed copies of our first Ione D steampunk adventure, “Miss Ione D and the Mayan Marvel.” If you’re not already a member, we urge you to go to Goodreads.com and sign up. It’s free and it gives you access to book news, forums, reviews and of course giveaways.

I’ve been on Goodreads for a few years, but only recently have I been using my author account consistently for promotion. In all that time I’ve never applied for any of the giveaways, so I decided to try it. I found 81 pages of giveaways at approximately 30 books per page. At first, I thought I’d scan through all of them to get a rough idea of the distribution of genres but I only made it half the way through. At that point, I applied the sci-fi filter (you can search by genre) which narrowed it down to 6 pages. In that vast number of books, I only found three steampunk titles. So our Ione D. will have the genre almost to herself! By the way, I signed up for 16 giveaways total, including 3 nonfiction, a couple mysteries and lots of sci-fi.

This large number of books in this list is probably one of the reasons that Goodreads has decided to start charging $119 per author giveaway, starting next week. Up until now, it’s been free of charge. Since this price is a bit steep for independent authors, I predict that there will be fewer of these deals available in the near future. Therefore I suggest you go sign up for a bunch of them. As the venerable Snuffy Smith always said, “Time’s a-wastin’!”
